World’s wrestling fans definatly know the name “The Rock” the Ring name , his real name is Dwayne Johnson, his finishing move in wrestling that gets fans on their feet.
Dwayne Johnson’s popularity is far beyond the wrestling world, the California native one of Hollywood’s most successful superstars as well as a global figure of affection.
Wrestling is in his Blood ,his grandfather, Peter Maivia a well known wrestler as well as his dad, Rocky Johnson, who created history by becoming the first black to win the WWF Tag Team Championship along with partner Tony Atlas.
He born in 1972 in California , When Johnson was 14, the family relocated to Honolulu while his father was a super star in the wrestling in WWF.
“The first rock bottom that I hit was out of college where I worked for 10 years from the time I started playing football at 14 years old to the time I was 23, I think, and did not get drafted. I played in the CFL (Canadian Football League) for approximately 200 bucks a week Canadian. I got cut from the team a couple of months later, and I had to close that chapter in my life,” he said staradvertiser noted.
When Dwayne Johnson was 16 years old, he was 6’4 225lbs.
A young Rock was a footballer , he even won a full scholarship from the University of Miami, where he was a part of the national championship team of 1991. However he decided to pursue his carrer as a wrestler.
He made his WWF debut in 1996, under the name Rocky Maivia. a combination of his father and grandfather’s ring name.
“For me, I wasn’t just having ‘a tryout match,” because I had never actually had a real match in my life. Ever,” Jonson said in the interview
” WWE thought that I already had multiple matches under my belt, but little did they know. What they also didn’t know was that I was broke as hell and didn’t actually own wrestling gear – no boots, knee pads or most importantly.. wrestling trunks. I went to Sports Authority and bought some bright ass white volleyball knee pads, called my Uncle and asked if he had any trunks I could use for my tryout.”
He eventually found success in the ring grabbing the intercontinental title from Triple H ,while wrestling on Monday Night Raw .
His catchphrases “If you smell what the Rock is cooking”, “It doesn’t matter…” and “Jabroni” became immensely popular among the wrestling audience
The Rock wrestled in the side for Superstars like Steve Austin, Triple H and Mankind and also he linked himself with the ‘Nation of Domination‘ , a wrestling stable whose concept was based on the Nation of Islam and the Black Panther party.
The Rock dominated wrestling coverage and storylines for the a decade by holding the WWF/WWE championship belt eight-times during that stretch. But Johnson wanted something more.
He entered at Hollywood stardom ,he made his Hollywood debut in 2001 in The Mummy Returns.
“Casting The Rock as an unintelligible half-naked warrior who later turns into a half-man, half-scorpion monster painted with some truly awful early 21st century CGI was pretty much the perfect way to introduce the man to the non-WWE watching universe.” kotaku quoted .
In a film career spanning over 16 years, he has given many hit films like The Run Down , The Tooth Fairy , Journey to the Center of the Earth 2, The scorpion king, Be Cool , Walking Tall, Planet 51 ,The Game Plan ,Fast & Furious ,Rampage, Jumanji etc
“Pain & Gain” (2013), “Hercules” (2014) and “Central Intelligence” (2016) an add-on to his huge following he gained through these films.
“The Game Plan” for this film, he also received a nomination for ‘Favourite Movie Actor’ at the 2008 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
As per Forbes, Johnson’s current net worth is $190 million, his appearances in “Jumanji” and “Baywatch” took his earnings to an all new level.
