The 87-year-old man died last week after a recent diagnosis of Stage 4 colon cancer. The night before, with his family gathered at the hospital, he made a simple request to share a beer with his three sons
“My grandpa had been relatively healthy over the course of his life, but it was on the Sunday last week while he was in hospital that they realized it would be the end,” his grandson, Adam Schemm told.
“He called his grandchildren to tell us on the Monday. We took the picture Tuesday night and then he died from stage 4 colon cancer on Wednesday.”
The photo was tweeted out the next day by Norbert’s grandson, Adam Schemm, an Appleton native who now lives in Wauwatosa.
The tribute to his grandfather read: “My grandfather passed away today. Last night all he wanted to do was to have one last beer with his sons.”
The tweet had more than 30,000 retweets, more than 320,000 likes and more than 4,000 replies.
The comments and replies are similar moments.
“My grandmom did the same thing but with shots of Bailey’s,” one woman wrote, along with a picture of an older woman in a hospital bed surrounded by smiling faces, all holding plastic shot glasses.
“My brother in law wanted to play one last round of golf before he passed,” the commenter wrote.
“My grandfather just wanted a hot fudge sundae and wanted to see me again before he let go,” wrote a young woman next to her picture of them .
